Kaipatiki Project is one of the largest restoration and environmental education providers in Auckland, and we’re looking for keen and enthusiastic people to join us.
Each year, we eco-source, propagate and pot up a massive 25,000+ native plants. These plants contribute to restoration activities all over the North Shore, helping to rescue the bush from invasive plants and establish homes and habitat for native birds and other species.
The aim is to work together to create, build and restore natural forests in urban environments.

Kaipatiki Project provides regular, easily accessible, week-day volunteering opportunities. These particularly suit people who are between jobs, have stopped full-time work, or are baby-boomers with even more time to give. There is no pressure to commit your time and we don’t expect you to turn up every week, just come along if the mood takes you. A morning at Kaipatiki Project is always a refreshing distraction from the norm and a warm welcome and morning tea are always provided.
We would really appreciate your help protecting the environment – simply turn up at the following times and we will get you involved in our plant nurseries or out in the bush.
Please note: If you or someone you are referring may need additional assistance to volunteer here please let us know before visiting. This is a work-site with limited facilities and potential hazards. Covered shoes must be worn at all times in outside areas.
GROW NATIVES IN OUR PLANT NURSERIES
Monday & Thursday mornings 9am – 12pm
Nursery work at Kaipatiki Project Centre, 17 Lauderdale Road, Birkdale (North Shore).
A variety of tasks are available to suit different people. Volunteers may be propagating plants, pricking out seedlings, potting small plants, weeding, moving plants, tidying in and around the nursery, and may also be involved in controlling invasive weeds and planting in the local reserves.
We grow a range of native plants that we use for restoration of our local forest reserves, and to supply to other groups and individuals doing restoration projects. Community involvement and learning are crucial to our work – it is really important to us that there is an educational component for our volunteers when they come to us. We rely on the combined effort of our staff and volunteers to keep our nursery and restoration work going.
Requirements: A reasonable level of mobility and ability to follow simple instructions is necessary. Volunteers should wear closed in footwear and comfortable work clothes suitable for outdoor work and appropriate to the season. Bring your own close-fitting gardening gloves if you have them. Gloves are provided here but are not personal.
Wednesday mornings 9am-12pm
Nursery work at Engine Bay Community Plant Nursery, Bomb Point Drive, Hobsonville Point.
Tasks as above, relating mainly to native plant propagation. The nursery site here is in an area of ongoing new-build and redevelopment works.

You'll be asked to confirm time slots that work best for you. On the day, you join the project with the tools you confirmed to bring along - and then the fun part can begin!
