Hotspots

Many of our project sites have very poor biodiversity at present but a few landowners (both rural and urban) have provided useful information about sightings of ‘unusual’ wildlife, from bittern in the estuary to forest geckos in the bush. We haven’t seen kiwi or kokako in our local area for years, and there have been no recent reportings of Hochstetter's frog and short-tail bats. Many iconic species are also under threat, from koura to fernbirds.

Finding hotspots of less common/rare wildlife is the first step to developing a recovery plan.
